Volunteers are the life blood of Micah House.

Volunteers help our ministry of hospitality come to life by helping to make Micah House a home for newly arrived refugees.

Our volunteers:

Help weekly as a "daytime volunteer"

  • cleaning, shopping, gardening, or organizing the house
  • taking guests to appointments, helping them find their way around the community, connecting our guests with community services
  • translating for our guests

Help once or twice a month on evenings and weekend

  • enjoying outings and community events with our guests
  • helping our guests to learn English

Help as a “Meal Host”

  • preparing an evening meal at home or at Micah House to enjoy with our guests.  We have a different Meal Host for each weekday of the month.  Meal Hosts typically prepare for 10-12 residents + themselves.  Meals are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Help weekly as  a “Global Friend”

  • staying in touch with a  past guest, providing them with  friendly support as they settle into the community

Help occasionally

  • fixing things around the house, delivering furniture
  • repaint a room in the house to keep things fresh and clean
  • supporting the staff and board with fundraising and special projects

If you want to volunteer at Micah House, the first step is to fill out a Volunteer Application Form:

(Word document - PDF document ) When it has been completed, you can send it to us

For the safety of guests and volunteers Micah House requires everyone who spends time in the environment submit and keep current a police background check.    You can obtain this at a price from your local police station, or we can send you a link allowing you to complete the form online (which is then sent directly to us).  There is also a cost associated with this second option.

Micah House will accept a record check you have already obtained as long as it is not older than one year.
If you have questions, please contact us .

Myths About Refugees

MYTH: Canada respects the rights of all refugees and immigrants living in Canada.

Canadians are rightly proud of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms and our human rights commitments, but our record is not spotless. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has repeatedly criticized Canada for its slowness in reuniting refugee families.

MYTH: Canada has more difficulty intergrating newcomers today than a century ago. Immigrants are now more diverse.

Fears about immigrant integration are not new.  Generation after generation, people have worried about whether the most recent immigrants will integrate as well as previous immigrants.

MYTH: Refugee claimants pose threats to Canada's security.

Refugee claimants are not threats to security – they are seeking security and protection from threats to their own lives.

MYTH: Canada does more than its share to assist refugees and asylum seekers when compared to other countries.

On the contrary, international law recognizes that refugees often have no choice but to enter a country of asylum illegally.

MYTH: Real refugees are those who wait in refugee camps overseas. Those who make a claim in Canada jump the line and are not as deserving.

Refugees are people who have been forced from their homes by human rights abuses. All refugees have a right to protection, wherever they are.
